Rationale

The context in which this project was established includes:

  • An awareness that threats to water security is increasing.
  • Water security can be compromised by a range of different threats and threat scenarios.
  • Real time detection is essential for reducing the impact of water security events.
  • The development of such tools is a scientific and commercial opportunity.

 


The SAFEWATER project aims to develop a global generic solution for the detection and management of drinking water crises resulting from CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) contamination.

  • By developing improved water management models for the detection of abnormal behaviour in drinking water systems; improving contamination alert systems of large water drinking systems
  • By the development of spatial detection models and simulators to determine the source of the contamination and its spread.
  • By developing new water quality sensors to add to the existing ones and integrate vast use of domestic sensors for improved monitoring.
  • There are 3 water utilities, one is a subcontractor.
  • By testing the system in two water utilities and simulating a number of different use cases.

A unique challenge in SAFEWATER is the definition of several deliverables and outputs of the project as classified (up to a EU Confidential level), hence not all of the projects results can be shared with the public. This will be dealt with through a careful scrutiny of all published materials and activities by the SAFEWATER Security Advisory Group (SAG). SAFEWATER partners, with the guidance of the SAG and coordination team, will do its maximum to ensure that high level security is being enforced and the risk for security breach is being minimised.
